Beekeeping- Into the Hives Workshop

First year beekeepers will get into the hives with instructor Scott Benack at Morris Farm! Learn safe practices inspecting beehives and how to identify conditions affecting hive activity. Live demonstrations and hands-on tasks strengthen the student’s skills in queen identification, recognizing mite infestation and treatment, and lighting a smoker. Additional instruction in splitting hives, making food, and feeding practices will be offered. Mr. Benack is a licensed nuc seller and queen breeder, a live removal expert, and currently assists Morris Farm in yearly pollination efforts. Proper personal protection is required, including long pants, long sleeve shirts, and boots.  Disposable gloves and veils will be provided and veils will be available to use or you may bring your own bee suit/ veil. Learn how to deal with pest and disease pressure in your vegetable gardens by using completely natural applications from foliar sprays to building beneficial insect habitats. We will cover an array of topics and discuss how to protect your plants while working with nature instead of against it. Grow your own mushrooms easily and quickly! Learn how to choose the proper growing medium, what mushrooms need to thrive, interesting facts about the Fungi Kingdom, and how we can create symbiotic relationships with them in our gardens.
