Introduction to Bladesmithing (20SG)

In this one-day class, you will get the chance to use a vintage piece of equipment from the booming steel age in this area. A 100# Bradley power hammer, as well as a hand built 25-ton hydraulic press, and good old-fashioned elbow grease with hammer and anvil – all to create and finish a hand-forged blade with your own two hands. You will also walk away with basic forging knowledge that you can take back to your own shop and continue to use. This class is taught by Andrew Takach. On the popular TV show, Forged in Fire (season 4, episode 13), Andrew competed and ultimately won with his Shamshir sword. Small Engine Repair – Back to Basics (20SG)

Starting with the basics, learn the how’s and why’s of small gas engines, two (2) and four (4) cycle engines, and air-cooled overhead valve small engines. During the hands-on portion, you will be able to bring in your own equipment, troubleshoot and repair it to your satisfaction. The instructor will oversee and guide you in your work. Repairs can consist of anything from minor tune-ups to complete overhauls. Class is open to active USW employees; retirees and spouses may participate if no active worker is prevented from participating based upon course availability, as per the ICD Policy. Forged Camp Knife – January (20SG)

This is a more advance follow-up to the basic Bladesmithing course. The how’s and why’s, including heat treating and other aspects of knife making will be covered. You will forge slightly larger knives that can be used for many outdoor chores around home and camp. You will also fit your knives with high quality wood handles. Students will use a power hammer, hydraulic press, milling machines, bandsaw, drill press and belt grinders. The two-day class allows to go more in depth in the heat treating as well as other aspects of knife making. All safety and PPE will be provided. This class is taught by Andrew Takach.
